This project was started by a few high school dropouts; we wanted to build a resource and a network for other dropouts and any youth who want to get out of school, but it quickly became something deeper. Every day
millions of kids have their natural search of knowledge crushed by
schools that connect learning with pain and force instead of excitement and discovery. Reading is hated
because of years of useless short stories and imposed novels, history
feared because of one-sided textbooks that shorten years into
paragraphs and repeated math that may or may-not be used in the
future are
shoved down throats. The struggles and achievements of poor folks, people of
color,
women, and radicals appear as footnotes, while the 'triumphs' of imperialism and ecocide fill up chapters. A child can pass every
test but
still be called a failure because s/he did not spend the little
time
they have off doing homework. A youth can also spend all their
time doing
homework, and fail because they can't take standardized tests.
What is learned here is not whether we are actually learning or not, but whether we
are able to produce something that meets imposed abitrary requirements. Not every child
is going to learn the same way. Some may learn from notes, reading, or
audio/visual, while others learn from hands-on experience. Public education overlooks all of this and reduces us to names on an attendence sheet.

we
were sick of having our lives organized by teachers, psychiatrists,
parents, cops, and advertisements, so we dropped out of school and began to
take our lives back. we found that we were not
alone... that youth all over the world are rising up against
alienating institutions and personal relationships. from the streets of
Seattle to the squats of Berlin; from the mountains of Peru to
the hills of
Appalachia; in schools, psych wards, and jails an insurrection is
spreading... |
